The olives from which this oil is extracted were selected and brought to Venafro in the 4th century B.C. by Marco Licinio, from whom they take the name of "Licinian olives." A precious and limited-production oil that has always inspired numerous poets, including Gaius Plinius Secundus (1st century A.D.), who in "Naturalis Historia" stated, "By public admission, even in this natural good (oil), Italy has reached primacy throughout the world, thanks especially to the land of Venafro and for that district that produces Licinian oil, hence also the special glory of the Licinian olive tree."
Appreciated even then for its fruity aroma, it was reserved only for the tables of emperors and aristocrats. Considered the secret of longevity and vigor, it was also used for body care and for the cult of the deceased.
